The Okavango River rises in the Angolan highlands and flows over 1000 miles,
passing through Namibia before entering Botswana and forming the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is unique, as it is the
largest inland delta in the world, instead of flowing into the sea, the annual
flood of fresh water flows inland, spreading over 15 000 sq km of the Kalahari
sand in a maze of lagoons and channels.
In the centre of
the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Wildlife Reserve
(Botswana), a 3 000 sq km paradise. Proclaimed a wildlife reserve by
the Tswana people in 1963, Moremi is undoubtedly one of the world's most
pristine wilderness areas. Moremi is a place of lily-covered wetlands, grass
plains and forests, where even at the busiest time of year you're likely to be
the only spectators at the most dramatic animal sighting.
