SOUTHERN AFRICA 2004

Our second day in Garden Route was really outstanding.  We had a nice forest walk, a small but fascinating safari trip, and have seen nice sceneries, finally found a cozy, little hotel to stay.

MORNING WALK IN THE FOREST  -  We followed a road sign to the 'waterfall'  and the 'big gum tree', and we did a nice morning walk in a lush forest.

Nice blooming tree

Dewy forest flowers

A waterfall

A giant eucalyptus ('gum tree'), planted in 1922.
Height: 68 m, Diameter: 124 cm.

BUFFALO HILLS GAME RESERVE - We visited a Jurassic-like little park, where we experienced the beauty and tranquility of Africa in a nutshell.  The park is 15 km from Plettenberg Bay and 35 km from Knysna, in east direction. Paul our safary leader, had excellent contact with the wild animals. While he was talking to them, they turned towards us, and cam a bit closer.

This was the entrance of the Bufffalo Hills Game Reserve.

The farm has a liqueur factory. This  peeling machine creates the input fruits.

Zebras in the green field.

The landscape is like 'Jurassic park'. Many gnus, antelopes, impalas, and also one reindeer.

Suddenly a big rhino showed up.

She was posing in front of our safari car.

Two minutes later a boy rhino also appeared.

He was very scary but very calm.

We were very close to the rhinos.

This impala girl is a real photo model...

A young giraffe...

... and two other young giraffes.

Wild lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica), which are very expensive in our flower shops.
They just grow everywhere...

Helmeted guinea fowls

INCREDIBLE BEAUTY OF GARDEN ROUTE

A nice bay, with boats

A narrow gorge ...

... where the photo was taken from a bridge, ...

... and this is how the other side looks like.

Bloukrans River Bridge

The bridge is a world famous bungee jumping place.

A brave girl ...

This is the highest bungee jumping place of the world: 216 m high.
It has the Guniess World Records Certificate.

PORT ELIZABETH - The city, which has a nickname of  'PEE-EE'  is 800km east from Cape Town. It  is known for its sunshine and sandy beaches.  It's population is 1,1 million.  In fact we spent less than two hours in the town, as it became dark soon. It is a friendly town, base don the first impressions.

This is how the garden district looks like.

The town has hilly parts with modern buildings.

The town is situated in a large bay.

Road crossing in the town center.

The beach at Summerstrand beach resort, close to PE.

Lighthouse in Summerstrand

KAREEDOUW - From Port Elizabeth we headed towards north, to the area of 'Klein Karoo' (see next chapter).
In a little town, called Kareedouw we found a cozy hotel, called Hotel Assegaaibosch.

The hotel had the oldest pub in the Eastern Cape, ...

... the best steak,

... the best stove, with a cute dogy....

... the best pool,...

... and an amazing beautiful garden.
