SOUTHERN AFRICA 2004

The Namib Desert was  wonderful (Sesriem Canyon,  Sossusvlei, sand dunes, dune bugs and lizards...). We closed our day in  the German Brewery of Swakopmund, eating "Wiener Schitzel" and drinking Hansa Pils.

A large 'block house' for birds...

The nest is really very large.. size of a cow.

Sesriem is a fascinating canyon in Namib-Naukluft Park, which is  Namibia's largest nature reserve.  It includes a 100 to150 km broad belt of land that stretches along the coastline.

The narrow gorge, which is about 1 km long and 30-40 m deep, was formed by erosion. It is easy to walk in the canyon in the dry season, as you see.

The Sossusvlei (means death valley), Namibia's famous highlight in the heart of the Namib Desert, is a huge clay pan, enclosed by giant sand dunes.

Some of the spectacular hills of sand are, at a height of 300 metres, the highest in the world.
This one is called: Dune 45.

It takes a while to climb up the dune, as the sand is very sinky.

We have seen bug like this one, running very quickly on the sand.

Gabor also climbed the dune...

...and now he is on the top.

While he was up, I was taking photos of this sand-colored lizard.

The footprints made by the climbers, are quickly recovered by the wind.

Cars parking there look very small from the top. This lizard also 'climbed' the dune, aand he could make it easily. Two birds are enjoying the shadow, as the sun is heating up the sand.
This beetle drinks in an interesting way: Mornings he collects moisture by condensing the fog on his body, and while lowering his head, the water is dropping into his mouth.
Toktokkie is his common name.

Toktokkie is walking on the top of the dune, watching curiously into the camera This tree has interesting 'beans'. Sossusvlei is hot and dry, no wonder why it is called the 'death valley'.
There are many spectacular dunes in Namib Naukluft Desert.

We were driving towards north in a plain black desert, through many hours. The desert was so dusty that the sun could hardly shine through. This is the  Rest Camp in town Swakopmund, where we spent the night. (The photo was taken in the morning.)
Swakopmund is a 'little Germany', also having a Hansa Brewery, where we had nice dinner and beer.
