The construction of an Arch was ordered by Napoleon 1st on 16 February 1806, as a triumphal monument. However the construction work were compeleted only 30 years later, in 1836, during the reign of of King Louis-Philippe.
 
1806. február 16-án  I. Napóleon császár kezdte el építtetni a Grande Armée dicsőségét hirdető diadalívet, amely a császár ókori Róma iránti rajongását is kifejezte. A munkálatok csak 30 év múltán, I. Lajos Fülöp uralkodása alatt, 1836-ban fejeződtek be.
