ON THE ROAD - between Weymouth and Edinburgh

From Weymouth it took a couple of days to get to Edinburgh.

Stratford on Avon.
Shakespeare was born in this house. A small and interesting museum can be seen inside.

Stratford on Avon.
Walking in the downtown.

Picturesque (and wet) scenery in Umbria, Lakes district.

Over the spectacular Kirkstone Pass.

Kirkstone Pass
 (1,476 feet)

Kirkstone Inn was the place where we could warm up.

Drinking beer and tea in Kirkstone Inn.

A small village...

Lake Ullswater is one of the beautiful Lakes.

Gretna Green.
For 250 years, thousands of young lovers have made for Gretna Green, where they can wed in a hurry under Scotland's lenient marriage laws.
This was the place where we 'entered' Scotland...

BORDERS.
Hadrian's Wall.
Aelius Hadrianus, the Roman Emperor wanted to separate the Romans from the Barbarians.
He built a long WALL (from sea to sea) in 130 AD.

Ships are very common animals in the UK, also in Scotland.

Jedburgh Abbey is perhaps the best preserved of the Border abbeys.
A majestic building founded by David I in 1138 for Augustinian canons.
Look that green grass!

The front gardens of the houses were magically beautiful!

Another nice garden in Melrose.

Melrose Abbey.
This marvelous abbey was founded  in 1131, by David I, King of Scots, for Cistercian monks.

Undoubtedly the finest of Scotland's four great Border Abbeys, Melrose Abbey is a magnificent Ruin on a grand scale with lavishly decorated masonry.

Crichton Castle.

One of the ancient beautiful castles.
The oldest part of the castle was built in the 14th century. Francis Stewart, Earl of Bothwell,  in 1581 formed Crichton Castle into a comfortable renaissance residence. The castle became one of the most impressive examples of renaissance architecture in Scotland. On the 10th - 12th January 1562, Mary Queen of Scots was guest here at the marriage of her half-brother.
