SOUTHERN AFRICA 2004

Town Swakopmund is a 'Little Germany' in Africa, on the west coast of Namibia.

The town has very clean wide streets and elegant shops. On this cloudy morning the streets were quite empty.

We stopped on the coast north from Swakopmund. The sand is very solid, so driving is easy.

The coastline was very deserted and the ocean was wild.

In a small resort a man was selling desert rocks and other minerals.

Suddenly the landscape became black, which was resulted most probably by an enormous volcanic eruption.

On this area 4x4 driving is prohibited by road signs, as driving would destroy this black volcanic coating. This small plant looks very interesting.

The landscape was very black perhaps through hundred kilometers.

At a point we saw this jackal.

The jackal tried to hunt out something under a stone.

This whale bone and animal skull are displayed at the entrance of Cape Cross National Park.

Cape Cross has a very famous seal colony of about 100.000 seals.

The seals are very noisy, but some of them still can sleep well.  This baby is dreaming about tasty fishes perhaps. The seals are photographed by the tourists. On the other hand fishermen are quite unhappy as they eat up too much fish from the sea.
Seal babies sometimes are killed by jackals, hanging around the colony.

In 1486 Portuguese Diego Cáo landed here and erected a stone cross in honour of John II of Portugal. On the coastal line the ocean is always stormy. Through the history many ships were destroyed here.
This shipwreck has been here since 30 years. The victims were fishermen from South Africa.
Sand sometimes covers the road

This plant is 'Welwitscia Mirabilis'.
The first Welwitschia plant was discovered by Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch, and named after him.

The red landscape is characterizing this region.  Road through the red desert.
This picture has many colors: red, yellowish, green, brown...

A little springbok in the big red rock desert. This donkey cart had a flat tire. Even our compressor did not help. This was our African style camp in Damaraland, called Aba Huab, close to Twyfelfontein.
We really enjoyed this peaceful campsite (this photo was taken next morning).
