Stories
|
(1) Ella’s father (Kozmann Gusztáv) was a photographer in Debrecen, the
family lived there. He participated on exhibitions in Paris, where he won prizes
with his photos.
(2) Kozmann Gusztáv's death was caused by an accident: he was reading
newspaper and he was smoking at the same time. He fell asleep and his cigarette
lit his newspaper. This caused his death.
(3) After the death of Kozmann Gusztáv, his wife (Ella’s step mother) was sent to an institute of
psychiatry (“lunatic asylum”) by her "loving" relatives, because the relatives
wanted to get her properties (How cruel!)
(4) Ella’s grandmother, Hirth Terézia, was already 94 years old. She still
had very good health, she went shopping everyday, to the greenmarket. One day
she came home from the market, carrying two heavy bags, which she dropped on the
floor. “That was enough for me, others should go on from now” – she told, and
she died in two days.
(5) Ella’s grandmother, Hirth Terézia was a little girl during the War for
Freedom in 1848. She had bad experiences, when the Austrian soldiers attacked
them, shouting “Wo sind die Kossuth Hunden?” – which means “Where are the
Kossuth dogs?” (Kossuth Lajos was the leader of the Hungarians, in the fight
for freedom.) The soldiers then killed the pigs, cooked them, and have eaten
up everything. They were not aware of the family! (How cruel...)
(6) The webmaster's memory about her grandmother: - Ella's granddaughter, Ámon Klára was 6 years
old when her grandmother died. When she was only 3 and half years old, her
mother was away for baby delivering in hospital. In those days each morning Klári went to the grandmother who lived in the next door flat. Granny combed and
braided her hair. (Klári's father had no skill to do this.) Later when Ella
became ill, her daughter Hédi decided to move together with her mother. They
sold the two flats and bought a bigger one (Budapest, I, Hattyú u. 8/a.) to have
enough place for Hédi's family and the grandmother. Since Hédi was working, Amon
Klári's mother cooked lunch for Ella. The lunch was carried to the grandmother
by Ámon Klári who was 5 years old. The flat was quite close in the same street. Ella was sitting
whole day in an armchair, covered up in a blanket, and sometimes complained that
her legs have pain and she cannot walk. |
