Bolzano/Bozen (262 m above sea level, 97.000
habitants) is the chief town of South Tyrol
(called Süd Tirol by the Germans, and Alto Adige by the Italians)
The town is situated on a plain where rivers Isarco and Adige join.
Bolzano and the whole area
is a bilingual
territory where Italian and German are widely spoken, and both used as official
languages. The culture is an interesting mixture of the German and Latin world.

Dukes of Austria,
the Habsburgs and the Italians all built here buildings, castles, towns and
villages.

MERANO / MERAN
A charming town (325 m above sea level)
of green plants, maple trees, magnolias, palms, colored flowerbeds,
trimmed hedges forming artistic figures. Narrow streets, old houses, churches
recall the Austro-Hungarian times.
The town is surrounded by fascinating mountains.
